Adam J. Altman, MD, a Cataract/Lens Implant, LASIK, and Fellowship-trained Corneal Specialist, was the first doctor in Berks County to perform laser vision correction, and he has successfully performed thousands of these life changing surgeries. Dr. Altman joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania (then West Reading Ophthalmic Associates) in September 1995. Dr. Altman received his undergraduate degree with Honors in Economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Magna cum Laude, in 1980. In 1984 he worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where he was first author on several original Eye Surgery publications. He received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School with numerous honors in 1985, graduating in the top 10% of his class.

He performed his ophthalmology residency at the world-renowned Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina from 1986 to 1989. In 1989 he served as Chief Resident of both the Durham and Ashville Veterans Administration Hospitals.

His formal training in refractive vision correction surgery came in 1989 and 1990 while he completed a Cornea and External Eye Disease fellowship at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1990. In 1992, he co-founded the Refractive Surgery Service at Wills Eye Hospital. He served as an Assistant Professor at Wills Eye Hospital from 1990 and joined our practice in 1995. Dr. Altman was elected President of Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in 2005.

Dr. Altman was awarded a Cornea and External Eye Disease fellowship at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1990. The facilities that Dr. Altman trained at (Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Duke University Eye Center and Wills Eye Hospital) are all ranked among the top six eye surgery training programs (out of 150) by US News and World Report. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and National Board of Medical Examiners in 1990.

During his career, Dr. Altman has been active in clinical research. He has enjoyed mentoring other physicians and teaching them the finer aspects of Cataract Surgery and Bladeless LASIK, both in the United States and around the world and during humanitarian medical mission work in Mexico and Kenya.

Dr. Altman has published widely in the peer reviewed medical literature and regularly lectures to other physicians. He has presented numerous papers at Wills Eye Hospital’s Medical Conferences as well as the prestigious New England Ophthalmologic Society. His publications, presentations and research activity include work on Microincision Cataract Surgery, Astigmatism Correction, Presbyopia Correction with Multifocal Lens Implantation, LASIK and PRK laser vision correction, Corneal Transplantation and DSEK, Ocular Anesthesia, Streptococcus Pneumonia and Scleritis, Pterygium Surgery, Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis, Recurrent Erosion Syndrome, and Reversible focal neurologic deficits in severe iron deficiency anemia. He was a site co-investigator on the nationally noted HEDS study (Herpetic Eye Disease).

He served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Cornea Service at Wills Eye Hospital and Thomas Jefferson Medical Center, and in 1992 was one of the co-founders of Wills Eye Hospital’s Refractive Surgery Service.

Dr. Altman specializes in micro incisional cataract surgery with correction of astigmatism, presbyopia correction with multifocal lens implantation, all-laser (Bladeless) LASIK, PRK, and pterygium surgery.

Dr. Altman performs Laser Vision Correction, (Bladeless LASIK) on site at the Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center using the excimer laser to correct for nearsightedness and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Dr. Altman was the founding Medical Director of the Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center and former Medical Director of the Surgery Center of Pottsville. He currently enjoys staff privileges at Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center and Reading Hospital-Tower Health.

Angela Au Barbera, MD is a board-certified specialist in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania.   

Dr. Barbera completed her undergraduate and medical degrees through the six-year accelerated BS/MD program between Penn State University and Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Barbera then completed her internship at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and her ophthalmology residency at Temple University Hospital. In her final year of residency, she had the honor of serving as Chief Resident. Dr. Barbera subsequently completed a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at Albany Medical Center/Retina Consultants. She is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Prior to joining Eye Consultants, Dr. Barbera worked in both private practice and academic hospital settings. Dr. Barbera previously served as Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Albany Medical Center and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. She also previously held the leadership positions of Assistant Program Director and Program Director of the ophthalmology residency program at Temple University Hospital. 

Dr. Barbera has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr. Barbera’s research includes work in diabetic retinopathy, retinal tumors and telemedicine.

Christine Gieringer, OD, a native of Berks County, joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in July 2020 as a comprehensive eye care specialist and optometrist.

Dr. Gieringer received her Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Alvernia University in 2016. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree, summa cum laude, from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University May 2020. She most recently completed a clinical externship at Einstein Medical Center involving ocular disease management.

She completed advanced studies in contact lenses and participated in specialty contact lens fittings on various post-surgical patients and those with Keratoconus.

Dr. Gieringer is fluent in Spanish and sees patients at the Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania Wyomissing and Pottsville locations.

David S. Goldberg, MD, FAAP has been practicing at Eye Consultants of PA since 1998. He specializes in pediatric ophthalmology, adult strabismus and oculoplastics and lacrimal disease. Dr. Goldberg provides both medical and surgical care. Dr. Goldberg has authored several publications in peer reviewed journals including a comprehensive study of adult diplopia. His articles have also described novel surgical techniques to treat difficult problems in oculoplastics.

Dr. Goldberg completed his Ophthalmic Residency at Louisiana State University and his Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship with the renowned Zane Pollard, MD of Eye Care Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a special interest in Oculoplastic Surgery in both children and adults.

Dr. Goldberg graduated with high honors from Princeton University and served an externship at Wills Eye Hospital. He graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society.

Y. Katherine Hu, MD, MS is a comprehensive ophthalmologist at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hu received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, summa cum laude. She received a Master of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

She completed her medical education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honorary Society and graduated first of her class. She also received the American Medical Women’s Association Glasgow-Rubin Achievement Award for academic excellence. After serving an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center, she performed her Ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

Prior to her medical career, Dr. Hu was involved in medical research, as a graduate student as well as a research scientist at the National Institutes of Health. She had visited and worked in eye hospitals in China and India after her residency.

As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, Dr. Hu has special interests in helping patients obtaining better vision through cataract surgeries. She also has strong interests and experiences in medical management of diabetic eye diseases and age-related macular degeneration.

Barry C. Malloy, MD, one of the Vitreo-Retinal specialists at Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, received his undergraduate training at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He completed his medical internship at Berkshire Medical Center and his residency in Ophthalmology was served at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Dr. Malloy completed a Vitreo-Retinal fellowship at the Washington Hospital Center in 1990 and practiced in southeast Massachusetts for the first six years. He came to Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in 1996 and has continued his career-long interest in macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

Dr. Malloy is experienced in the most current treatments both approved and experimental for diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration and retinal detachment surgery including the use of intraocular injections such as Kenalog, Eylea, Lucentis and Avastin, and surgical tools such as Perfluorocarbon liquids, SF6, silicone oil and C3F8 gases for complicated retinal detachment repair.

Dr. Malloy is currently on staff at Reading Hospital-Tower Health and the Pennsylvania Eye & Ear Surgery Center.  He is Chief of the Ophthalmology Section at Reading Hospital – Tower Health for the past 8 years.

Mehul H. Nagarsheth, MD joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania after completing his Glaucoma Fellowship at Tufts New England Eye Center and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston in July 2013.

He grew up in Marlboro, New Jersey and received his bachelor’s degree Cum Laude in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology with a dual major in Political Science from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 2004. Dr. Nagarsheth received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in June 2008 where he continued to complete his internship. He performed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio from 2009 to 2012. During his chief year of residency, Dr. Nagarsheth also traveled abroad to Hyderabad, India where he completed a medical and surgical ophthalmology elective at the LV Prasad Eye Institute.

Dr. Nagarsheth has extensive experience in medical research of the eye.  He has presented several projects at national conferences and published studies in numerous scientific journals. He received the Best Resident Research Award at Case Western Reserve University Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology Annual Research Symposium in June 2012. He was also the recipient of the National Eye Institute Travel Grant in May 2011. He remains interested and active in pursuing new and innovative ways of managing glaucoma both medically and surgically.

As an ophthalmology resident and glaucoma fellow, Dr. Nagarsheth was very active in teaching junior trainees and medical students. Dr. Nagarsheth also performed refractions and ophthalmic screenings at MedWorks and the Philadelphia and Cleveland Free Clinics throughout his postgraduate training.

Dr. Nagarsheth is currently on staff at Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center, Reading Hospital-Tower Health, Physicians Care Surgical Hospital, and Physicians Care Surgery Center.

Abhishek K. Nemani, MD is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of Glaucoma and Cataracts. Amy M. Olex, OD, rejoined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in 2023 as a comprehensive eye care specialist and optometrist.

A native of Luzerne County, Dr. Olex graduated magna cum laude from Wilkes University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2001.

She completed externships at The Eye Institute at Pennsylvania College of Optometry: Pediatrics and Binocular Vision/Primary Care (Philadelphia), Wilkes-Barre VA Hospital, Hazleton Eye Center and O’Donnell Family Eye Care (Wilkes-Barre).

Prior to rejoining Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania, Dr. Olex has had the opportunity to work in various settings throughout Northeastern and Central PA as a corporate Independent Doctor of Optometry, a Consultant and Coordinator at Northeast Sight Services (formerly The Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind), staff Optometrist at the Eye Center of Central PA in Bloomsburg and at the Eye Center of Central PA in Bloomsburg, and Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania’s Pottsville office (2006-2011).

Her main area of focus includes comprehensive eye examinations and ocular health management, with an interest in dry eye disease. She enjoys talking with patients to counsel them on all aspects of eye care and is available to provide routine exams and contact lens fittings as well as management of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and various other ocular disease processes. Dr. Olex is also happy to provide pre- and post-op care for cataract and refractive surgery patients.

Tapan P. Patel, MD, PhD is a board-certified ophthalmologist, specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous at the Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Patel joined the Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania after completing a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery from the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University. He completed his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from the University of Delaware in 2007 and subsequently obtained his medical degree and PhD (Bioengineering) from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015. Dr. Patel then completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and his residency in Ophthalmology at the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan.

Dr. Patel has an extensive publication record, both in basic science and clinical research related to bioengineering, neuroscience, and ophthalmology. His work has been published in various high-impact peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Neuron, Brain, Journal of Neuroscience, and Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has received some of the most selective and prestigious honors including the Goldwater Scholarship, the Beckman Scholarship, the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Award, and the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship.

Dr. Patel is an expert in management of a wide range of diseases of the retina including central serous retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, inherited retinal dystrophy, macular degeneration, macular hole and pucker, uveitis, and vein occlusion. He is also skilled in many state-of-the-art procedures and surgeries including small gauge vitrectomy for retinal detachment and macular hole repair, scleral buckling, intraocular injections, laser retinopexy, and cryotherapy.
